Tokyo Competition

This is a picture of a street in Tokyo, the capital city of Japan.
Last Friday 6R did an assembly on Japan. They sang some simple Japanese songs and told us some facts about this fascinating country.

PRIZE COMPETITION
Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, used to have a different name. The first person this week to tell Mr Ricketts at lunchtime what this name was will win a special Japanese prize.

(Try researching 'Tokyo' and 'history'.)

The Eco-council are running a competition to find the most eco-friendly class!
Starting next week (1st Feb), members of the eco-council will be inspecting your classroom at lunchtime.
Have you turned off your lights?
Have you turned off your projector?
Have you turned off the radiators if windows are open?
Have you recycled your scrap paper?

There will be a winner each week until half-term. Let's see if we can be more sustainable!

The children of Eulalia Bota.

These are some of Mr Ricketts' photos of the lovely children and staff of Eulalia Bota - the school he visited whilst he was in Spain.

The photos are of children from all different year groups although, at the moment, the school does not have a year 4 or a year 6.

All of the children, even the tiny ones, learn English and love to greet English visitors with a "Hello!"

The children study the same kinds of subjects as we do at St. John's but they don't finish lessons until 5 o'clock! To make up for this they do have two hours for dinner although they have to eat what they are given - not like at St. John's where Pat and her team give people a choice. The food, just like English school food is, of course, delicious.

The children don't have to wear school uniform but the younger ones do wear a blue overall to protect their clothes from getting dirt or paint on them.

The school itself looks very different to St. John's. From the outside it reminded Mr Ricketts of a building made out of yellow and white lego.

If you look at these pictures you can see the children, some teachers, the school, the dining hall, the playground (a little bit) and a few of the classrooms. Can you see anything different to St. John's? Do you think schools in Spain are very different to schools in England?

The children in years 3 and 5 at St. John's are incredibly lucky because they are going to be learning more about Eulalia Bota by writing to the children who go there. Maybe they'll make some new friends in a different country!

Mr Ricketts has many more pictures of Barcelona and the children of Eulalia Bota. He's going to put some more on the blog next week so that the children in Spain - who can also look at the blog - can see themselves on the internet.

Just in case they're looking now: "HOLA CHICOS!"

Some of Mr Ricketts' pictures from Barcelona, Spain.

Last October Mrs Smith sent Mr Ricketts to Barcelona in Spain to learn Spanish at Barcelona University and to do some work in a Spanish school. Although he was extremely busy Mr Ricketts managed to escape all the work and studying and, before he was caught and sent back, he managed to take these photographs of the quay and some of the famous buildings in Barcelona. Many of the famous buildings were designed by famous Spanish artists. The magnificent cathedral still being built in the bottom two pictures was designed by an artist called Gaudi.
PRIZE COMPETITION!
The first person to tell Mr Ricketts the name of this cathedral before the end of February will win a special Spanish prize!

What do you do in your Independence Time?

Independence Time is a great time to learn new things, or practise skills on your own or with friends. If you find something difficult, why not get a buddy to help you? You could look at your Digital Excellence records and go for gold, or just have a relaxing read in the morning.

Think about it before you get to school.... What are you going to spend your time doing?

Be aware... Mrs Seymour and Mrs Smith may be around to ask you what you're doing with your time... Don't be wasting it!

How e-safe are you?

At St. John's, we're experts at using the internet. Lots of us have mobile phones too. But do you know how to keep yourself, and your friends, safe? Always remember to keep your personal information secret from people you "meet" online. If you've only met online, then you don't really know who you're talking to. Be aware- look at these websites to see how to keep safe.

Attention all bloggers!

Don't forget to label your posts so that people can search for and find posts more easily using the labels found at the top right-hand corner of the blog. You can create your own labels but try to use ones already set up if possible. Each post can have more than one label, e.g. Year 5, Tudors, trip. The labels will appear under each post as well as at the top of the blog. If you click on them they will take you to any posts labelled in the same way.

Happy blogging!

Thanks,

The above web address is for the Catalan/English blog of our link school in Barcelona: Eulalia Bota. If you have a look at their blog, not only will you see fantastic video of the poet Michael Rosen but you might just find a video of Mr Ricketts and his fiance Man Shan performing a Meg & Mog story for the school's reception classes when they visited the school last October (Man Shan is Mog the cat).

Soon we're hoping to set up a blog on which the children of both St John's and Eulalia Bota will be able to post messages to each other and exchange pictures and ideas - in both Spanish and English. So listen extra hard in your Spanish lessons - it might help you make friends in another country!
